Making changes to your benefits during the year

If you experience certain life events during the plan year, you may be able to make changes to your benefits. For example, if you get married, you may want to add your spouse as a dependent under your plan with Petco, or you may want to join your spouse’s plan through their employer. You have a limited period of time in which to notify Petco that you’ve experienced a Qualified Life Event (QLE) and to make your elections. If you miss the notification and enrollment window, you must wait until the next Open Enrollment period to make changes to your coverage.

Processing a Qualified Life Event

If you experience a QLE during the plan year, you have 30 days to notify Petco and make your elections. If you do not complete the process within 30 days, you will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period to make changes to your benefits. QLE include but are not limited to:

  • Marriage or divorce
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Gaining or losing eligibility under a group healthcare plan (e.g. gain or loss of coverage under a Petco plan or through a spouse’s plan (dependent loses eligibility for coverage under a plan)
  • Death of a dependent
  • A change in home or work location that is no longer in an HMO’s service area
  • Losing or becoming eligible for Medicaid or a State’s premium assistance program under the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

You can add or remove dependents based on the type of QLE, but you cannot change plans.

Two ways to process your qualified life event

  • Click on the Benefits Enrollment button at the top of any page and enter your login credentials. Once you are logged in to Benefitfocus, click on the Life Changes link under Manage Account in the Quick Link section to begin your election change.
  • Contact the Petco Benefits Service Center at 855-847-6067 to speak to a benefit counselor Mon.-Fri., 8 am to 8 pm EST.

IMPORTANT: If you don’t make enrollment changes within 30 days of your QLE, you will not be eligible to make any changes to your Petco benefits until the next annual Open Enrollment Period.

Verification requirements

Proof of your QLE is required and must be submitted to the Petco Benefits Service Center within 30 days of your enrollment or your request will be denied. Refer to Qualifying Life Event and Required Documentation for additional details.​
